Pads are very easy to use and are worn in your undies. Pads labelled “Thin” or “Ultra-thin” are thin, lightweight, and comfortable, while still being absorbent. Pads labelled as “Extra” or “Super” are thicker and have extra padding, perfect for heavier days.
Prepare
Make sure to familiarise yourself with the pad. You’ll notice that pads contain sticky strips on the underside that keep them firmly in place inside your undies. The pad should be placed inside your undies, with the sticky side facing away from the body (rather than up against your skin – ouch!). When you’re using a Super or Overnight pad, you’ll notice that the back is longer than the front. This is for extra protection on high-flow days or for overnight. Regular pads don’t generally have a longer end, but they offer the same protection that you need for a consistent flow.
Stick
After unwrapping your pad, peel the paper off the sticky section and place the pad into your undies with the sticky side pressed against the fabric. This will make sure your pad is not moving around in your undies.
Wings
Some pads include additional material on the sides known as ‘wings.’ The wings easily wrap over the edges in the middle of your undies, keeping the pad firmly in place and providing extra protection from leakage. Pads without wings are preferred by some as they are less fussy and easier to attach and re-stick if necessary. It entirely depends on you, whether you prefer pads with or without wings –try both and see which one suits you the best!
When to use pads
Pads can be used at any time throughout your period – just choose the absorbency that best matches your flow. Many girls find it uncomfortable or difficult to use tampons towards the end of their period when the flow is much lighter, pads can be useful in this situation.
