Hand Towels VS Hand Dryers

Hand Towels or Hand Dryers - Which is Better?

Hand hygiene is essential for preventing the spread of germs and infectious diseases. Hand hygiene requires thoroughly washing hands with soap and water, followed by proper drying. Hand towels are generally considered to be more hygienic, while hand dryers are often more convenient and cost-effective in the long run. However, the choice between these two options ultimately depends on personal preference and the specific situation.

Faster Drying

A hand dryer can take up to 45 seconds to achieve the same dryness as a paper hand towel does in a few seconds. When hands remain wet, bacteria can breed more easily, increasing the risk of cross-contamination. A study published in the Journal of Applied Microbiology discovered that hand dryers were less effective than paper towels at removing moisture from hands, which could result in increased bacterial growth. Furthermore, hand towels are frequently more comfortable and pleasant to use, particularly for those with sensitive skin or who find the air flow from hand dryers uncomfortable.

Touch-Free Solution

Touch-free paper towel dispensers reduce overconsumption and paper wastage. Despite the fact that air dryers are advertised as no-touch solutions, the air they produce can actually quicken the spread of germs and increase the possibility of an outbreak.

Less Noise

According to a University of Westminster report, the average jet air dryer produces a noise level of 94 dB, which is louder than a heavy truck passing by at a distance of 3 metres. Some people find the noise and air flow unpleasant or uncomfortable.

Reduces Germs

A paper towel captures pathogens and moisture from the user’s hands and is then disposed of. Hand dryers operate at a speed of over 370 mph, spreading pathogens as far as 2 meters from the unit which linger in the air for up to 15 minutes.

Convenience

Hand dryers, unlike hand towels, do not need to be replenished on a regular basis, which can be a time-consuming and labour-intensive task. They also produce no waste, reducing the need for disposal and helping to reduce environmental impact. Furthermore, because hand dryers do not need to be replaced as frequently as hand towels, they can be more cost-effective in the long run.

Cost

Hand towels are generally less expensive to purchase initially, but they require constant replenishment and disposal, which can add up over time. Hand dryers, on the other hand, are more expensive to purchase initially, but they do not need to be replaced or disposed of on a regular basis. However, the cost of maintaining and repairing hand dryers should also be considered.
