Curved Monitor vs. Flat Screen: Should you make the Switch?

A relatively new technological breakthrough, the curved monitor ultimately fulfills the same functions as a traditional flat screen. However, several subtle differences between the two may just make the curved screen the better option for you, in ways that will completely transform the way you work.

Gamers love curved monitors because of their increased levels of immersion, the angles of the curved screens change the way we see the content and make the images feel closer to real life, giving gamers the feeling of being part of the game.

There are real benefits for those using curved monitors at work too, albeit a little different to those of the gamer.

Vision

In real life we see the world in 3D, which means the flat screens of traditional monitors limits our vision significantly. A curved screen, on the other hand, takes advantage of our peripheral vision, making images appear closer to reality and limiting distortion.

Curved monitors are significantly more eye friendly than their flat counterparts, with flat screens prone to blurriness and image distortion. This is reduced on a curved monitor due to the physics of light projection, with the shape of the curved screen causing the light to be aimed right at the viewer, limiting distortion. When our eyes no longer have to strain to see, sitting in front of a monitor all day can be a far less arduous task.

Space

One wide monitor takes up a lot less physical space than multiple monitors would, while allowing you equal screen space, so you can set up a clean and productive space at the same time as helping your eyesight and focus.

Because of the size of a curved monitor, it’s possible to have several pages or documents open at the same time, without having to switch between screens or tabs. The other advantage of a large and curved monitor is its immersive experience. Providing a level of detail and clarity for those in graphic design, gaming, or medicine, a curved monitor can help to eliminate distortion and the bezel gap that’s present in a dual-monitor setup.

Productivity

When user experience is enhanced, it follows that productivity improves as well. This is backed up by various studies, with one showing that blurred vision is four times less prevalent on curved monitors compared with flat monitors.

Reading on a curved screen is actually faster too, with curved monitor users able to find information 24% faster than on a flat screen. By reducing eye fatigue and discomfort, curved screens maximise the amount of time staff can work to their full potential.

Simple changes can also save time, especially when progressing to a single curved monitor from a multi-monitor setup, such as only having to adjust the brightness and other settings for one monitor instead of two or more. Maintaining the same resolution and settings for one curved monitor means an easier experience, with more time spent on the task at hand instead of adjusting screens.

It seems that making the switch from a flat screen (or two) to a curved one could not only help you to work faster, and more efficiently but also give your tired eyes the break they sorely need. For those who spend hours in front of a screen every day, particularly those who work in graphics based jobs, the curved monitors could be a savior!
