Childhood Writing Skills
When a child is taught writing skills in early childhood they learn comprehension, phonics and mechanics, perspective, and communicating perspective to the reader. All of the essential tools required for young students to not only become confident, and capable writers, but also readers! Put simply, solid writing skills make for better readers, improving comprehension and critical thinking.
Writing is an important avenue for self-expression and an effective form of communication for students of all ages, allowing them to express their feelings and explore their creativity from a young age. Later in life these skills allow them to pass down well-crafted and engaging stories from generation to generation.
Teachers know all too well that well developed early childhood writing skills are directly associated with higher academic outcomes later in school, so they utilise a variety of helpful techniques to give their students the best possible start in life. Going beyond penmanship and really getting in to the bones of writing strategies, story planning, organising thoughts and ideas, writing logical notes, and being able to take those ideas and concepts and turn them in to a story or written communication sets students up with valuable skills that will benefit them throughout school, and in to adult life, helping them to articulate their thoughts and ideas effectively to peers, colleagues, and employers.
