Harmony Week is a vibrant celebration of Australia’s rich cultural diversity, held every March. It’s a time for people of all ages to come together, embrace different cultures, and appreciate the strength that diversity brings to our communities. More than just an event, it’s a reminder to foster inclusiveness, show respect, and celebrate the many traditions that make Australia unique.

During the Harmony week, schools and communities across Australia come together to celebrate unity, acceptance, and cultural learning through engaging activities.

For children, hands-on experiences make these lessons more meaningful. That’s why we’ve created two interactive worksheets – the Diversity Flowers Worksheet and the Paper Bracelet Worksheet.

These fun and creative activities encourage kids to explore different cultures, express their understanding of diversity, and embrace the values of Harmony Week in a way that’s both enjoyable and memorable.

Why Hands-On Activities Matter

Children learn best when they are actively engaged in the process. Both the Diversity Flowers and Paper Bracelet activities allow kids to express themselves creatively while reinforcing the core values of Harmony Week.

Here’s why these activities make a difference:

  • Encourage Self-Expression: Kids can celebrate what makes them unique while discovering the beauty in others’ stories.
  • Spark Meaningful Conversations: Sharing their creations opens the door to discussions about culture, traditions, and diversity.
  • Create a Sense of Belonging: Every child gets a chance to contribute, helping to build a more welcoming and inclusive classroom.
  • Inspire Creativity: Designing and decorating let kids explore their imagination and bring their personal stories to life.

1. Diversity Flowers Worksheet

Just like flowers bloom in different shapes, sizes, and colours, people come from diverse backgrounds that make them unique. The Diversity Flowers Activity is a creative and meaningful way for children to explore and celebrate their own heritage while learning about their classmates’ cultures.

How It Works:

🌸 Flower Template: Each child receives a worksheet with a flower outline featuring multiple petals.

✏️ Personal Reflection: On each petal, children write or draw something unique about themselves. This could be a favourite cultural tradition, a language spoken at home, a special family custom, or a personality trait that makes them who they are.

🎨 Creative Expression: Kids bring their flowers to life by colouring them with crayons, markers, or paint, adding personal touches.

🗣 Sharing Circle: Once finished, children take turns sharing their flowers with the class, encouraging open conversations and fostering understanding of different backgrounds.

🌍 Classroom Mural: Educators can gather all the flowers to create a stunning mural that represents the beauty of unity in diversity.

2. Paper Bracelet Worksheet: Unity in Diversity

The Paper Bracelet worksheet is a fun and meaningful way for children to celebrate diversity and recognise that no matter our differences, we are all connected.

How It Works:

🎨 Design Your Bracelet: Each child receives a paper template to cut and decorate. They can draw patterns, write positive messages, or add symbols of diversity, such as flags, hearts, peace signs, or hands shaking.

🌏 Cultural Representation: Kids can personalise their bracelets with words or drawings that reflect their heritage. This might include traditional foods, clothing, special holidays, or meaningful cultural symbols.

🤝 Sharing and Pairing: After creating their bracelets, children exchange them with a classmate, reinforcing the value of respect, learning from one another, and embracing differences.

By participating in these activities, children not only learn about diversity but also develop valuable life skills like empathy, open-mindedness, and respect for all. Whether at school or at home, these lessons serve as a foundation for a more inclusive future, where every individual is celebrated for their unique qualities.
