Size-Based Recycling: Key to Waste Reduction

In recent years, there has been a growing global emphasis on sustainability, highlighting the critical role of recycling in effective waste management. Recycling offers a crucial benefit by conserving valuable resources like metals, plastics, and paper. By turning these materials into new products, recycling reduces the demand for raw materials extracted from the environment, helping to preserve forests, habitats, and ecosystems.

Australia faces considerable challenges within its recycling system, largely stemming from the sheer volume and diversity of waste materials generated.

Every year, Australia generates 76 million tonnes of waste, but only 63% of it is currently recycled. A major concern is plastic recycling, with 84% of plastics ending up in landfills and only 13% effectively recycled each year.

The size of recyclable items can be a challenge for efficient processing and these challenges go beyond simply dealing with physical waste. The challenges include the scalability of recycling systems, the efficiency of processing materials, and the social and economic factors influencing recycling behaviours.

According to a report by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), advancements in sorting and processing technologies can significantly boost recycling rates by reducing contamination and enhancing the quality of recycled materials. To address these challenges, Australia has committed $250 million to upgrade recycling facilities, focusing on advanced infrastructure for sorting and remanufacturing various materials.

Both large and small materials present unique problems and opportunities in recycling. Finding solutions to balance these factors is essential to optimise resource recovery and minimise the environmental impact of the recycling process.

The Importance of Size in Recycling

The size of items plays a crucial role in the recycling process for several reasons:

  • Logistics and Processing Efficiency

Larger items, such as furniture or appliances, require specialised handling and processing facilities. For instance, old refrigerators or washing machines need to be dismantled to separate recyclable components like metals and plastics. These items cannot be processed through standard household recycling bins and require separate collection and processing mechanisms.

  • Sorting and Contamination

When smaller items are thrown into recycling bins alongside larger ones, they pose a significant risk of contaminating the entire batch. 

Recycling facilities use automated systems to sort items by size, weight, and material, but a mix of sizes can disrupt these processes. For instance, plastic bottle caps, which are much smaller than the bottles when thrown in the recycling bin, can fall through the sorting screens designed to filter out larger materials, ending up in the wrong recycling stream or even in the landfill.

Similarly, small metal items like aluminium foil when mixed with larger plastic containers can cause equipment malfunctions, leading to downtime, higher maintenance costs, and reduced efficiency. Additionally, food residue on small items like yogurt lids can contaminate larger items like cardboard boxes, causing entire batches to be rejected. This contamination reduces the quality of recycled material, making it less valuable and less likely to be repurposed.

This contamination complicates the recycling process, requiring workers to manually separate items task, which is not only labour-intensive but also prone to human error. 

  • Resource Recovery

 Recovering resources from large items is crucial as they often contain valuable materials that can be reused if recycled properly. Electronic waste (e-waste) contains precious metals such as gold and silver, which can be extracted using specialised recycling methods.  

Without proper collection and processing methods tailored to their size, these valuable resources risk being lost and underutilised. Effective recycling not only reduces the volume of waste sent to landfills but also extends the lifespan of existing landfills and reduces the need for new ones. 

In Australia, various initiatives have been implemented to ensure proper recycling and recovery of valuable materials from both small and large e-waste items.

For instance, dedicated phone bins in shopping centres make recycling small electronics like smartphones and tablets easy. Specialised pickup and recycling facilities for larger e-waste, such as televisions, refrigerators, and desktop computers, ensure they are properly collected and processed. Similar initiatives include dedicated bins for batteries in hardware stores and collection points for old furniture and mattresses at local waste facilities. 

 These targeted recycling efforts help to streamline the recycling process, ensuring that different types and sizes of waste are appropriately handled and valuable resources are recovered efficiently. 

  • Market Demand

The economic feasibility of recycling large items depends on how much demand there is in the market for recycled material. Unlike stable markets for commodities like aluminium or cardboard, demand for recycled furniture or electronic components can be unpredictable and vary

This instability makes it harder to keep recycling these items efficiently, as market dynamics have a direct impact on the feasibility and profitability of recycling efforts. 

Solutions to Overcome Recycling Size-Related Challenges:

1. Education Campaigns and Awareness

Education campaigns play a crucial role in promoting environmentally responsible behaviour among consumers, particularly regarding the disposal of large items

Australians are increasingly conscious of proper waste management, guided by local council regulations. These councils provide clear instructions on recycling procedures, preparing items for collection, and special disposal guidelines.

Before discarding larger recyclable items, explore alternatives such as reuse or donation. Furniture, appliances, and electronics can often find new homes through charitable donations or thrift stores, reducing waste and supporting those in need. Many councils offer services for bulky waste pickup, while recycling depots and drop-off centres accept a wide range of materials, if they are clean and sorted according to local guidelines. 

For items not suitable for council services, private waste removal companies can responsibly dispose of them. These initiatives collectively promote sustainable practices and responsible waste disposal across communities. 

2. Improved Collection Systems

 Australian states can enhance their waste management systems by introducing tailored services for the collection of large items. This could include implementing scheduled bulky waste pickup days where residents can dispose of oversized items conveniently.

Establishing designated drop-off locations throughout the community can provide further accessibility for those unable to utilise curbside pickup. These initiatives not only streamline waste disposal processes but also encourage responsible disposal practices among residents.

3. Enhanced Sorting Efficiency

Traditional recycling often requires a lot of manual or automated sorting, that can be labour-intensive and inefficient.

Size-based recycling simplifies this process by focusing on distinct categories of items, making sorting faster and more accurate. Many local councils across Australia have implemented size-based recycling pilot programs. 

These initiatives involve collaboration with waste management companies and community engagement to test and refine size-based recycling methods at a local level.

4. Technological Advancements

 Investing in cutting-edge sorting technologies can be helpful in improving the efficiency of recycling facilities, particularly in terms of segregating larger items.  

 Systems incorporating robotic sorting and AI-driven analytics can enhance the speed and accuracy of material separation and can prove to be useful in resource recovery and waste management. 

5. Policy Interventions

Australian Government can implement policies aimed at encouraging manufacturers to prioritise recyclability in product design. These measures may include establishing guidelines that promote the reduction of packaging and product complexity, as highlighted by Environment Protection Australia (EPA) in 2022

The Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) has set packaging Targets for businesses ensuring that all packaging is 100% recyclable, compostable, or reusable by 2025, as well as eliminating single-use plastic packaging.

These initiatives seek to foster a shift towards more sustainable manufacturing practices by incentivising the creation of products that are easier to recycle and consume fewer resources throughout their lifecycle.

6. Container Recycling Scheme

Australia has implemented a widely successful Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) across several states, providing consumers with refunds for returning designated beverage containers.

South Australia’s remarkable success with its CDS is attributed largely to its inclusive approach, which encompasses a variety of container sizes, including larger ones often used for bulk beverages. 

 By accommodating diverse container sizes, the scheme not only promotes environmental sustainability through increased recycling rates but also enhances consumer engagement by offering incentives that appeal to a wide range of beverage consumers.

7. Textile Recycling

The recyclability of textiles and clothing items is significantly impacted by their size. Smaller items, such as t-shirts, can undergo recycling processes more efficiently compared to larger items like mattresses or carpets, which present considerable challenges due to their size and complex composition.

According to the Australian Council of Textile Recycling, larger textile items constitute a significant portion of landfill waste due to inadequate recycling infrastructure. Innovations in recycling technology are crucial for overcoming these barriers, enabling more efficient recovery and reuse of textiles across all sizes.

The importance of item size in recycling varies significantly depending on the material, local infrastructure, and regulatory framework.

Australia’s efforts in managing waste and promoting recycling highlight both successes and ongoing challenges. By prioritising targeted recycling initiatives, educating consumers, and strengthening policies, Australia can improve its recycling initiatives with solutions that are well-suited to different sizes of materials.
