For the last two years COVID-19 has interrupted not only our ability to travel for fun and to see family, it’s also put a stop to business travel. Never ending cancellations of face-to-face meetings, conferences, and conventions can make it feel like we’re not as productive. And while we’ve all gotten used to meeting via video call there’s nothing quite like being in the same room with someone to really get things done!
The global vaccine rollout has led to the reopening of borders, easing of restrictions, and a slow return of business travel to pre-COVID levels. As we try to get back to face-to-face business, travellers must ensure safety and security procedures are in place as business travel now comes with a whole new raft of concerns. According to a Global Business Travel Association poll, 62% of companies have changed travel safety and security policies for their employees, and 55% have introduced new travel approval procedures.
Here are some tips to help ensure a safe and secure trip.
- Prepare ahead of time
Keep up with the latest information regarding outbreaks, quarantine requirements, or travel restrictions at your destination as the rules can be very different country by country, and state by state and can still change quickly. Also, be sure to check the COVID-19 vaccination and PCR testing requirements of the airline as well as the place you’ll be visiting.
- Make use of technology
Some states have launched their own COVID-19 mobile apps for safe check-ins, proof of vaccination, and contact tracking to assist in monitoring and mitigating transmission. By downloading them ahead of time, you can ensure that you have the most up-to-date knowledge and information specific to your destination.
- Hotel safety guidelines
While the hospitality industry is prioritising COVID-19 safety practices, business travellers are still solely responsible for their own protection. Choose accommodation with flexible booking options and a good cancellation policy, as COVID-19 regulations are constantly changing. In terms of hygiene, look at individual hotel safety guidelines, such as mandatory masks, social distancing measures, sanitisation frequency, and contactless check-ins. It doesn’t hurt to take a peek at recent online reviews to make sure that COVID safety measures are being followed by the hotel.
- Travel insurance
Whether you’re travelling domestically or internationally, check-in with your employer if they provide COVID-19 travel insurance for business travel. This can be from a private insurance firm or a package from the airline with which you are travelling. Specific COVID-19 travel insurance covers hospitalisation charges, overseas hospital confinement benefits, 24-hour phone helpline, and referral services, which your private travel insurance or credit card might not cover.
- Flying interstate
Inquire with your airline ahead of time for price waivers or cancellations, due to the frequent changes in travel requirements, especially if you’re going to a different state or territory. At the airport, instead of using traditional boarding passes, use an electronic or contactless mobile pass that you can scan and display to the airport staff.
- Implement best COVID-19 hygiene practice
Even if you’re fully vaccinated (and boosted), you still need to follow precautions and practice good hand hygiene to stay safe and healthy. Always keep antibacterial wipes, hand sanitiser, face masks, or personal travel kit to feel safer while travelling.
- Attending conferences and conventions
Guidelines for in-person gatherings can change at any time depending on the state’s public health and safety guidelines. Always remember to follow the rule of physical distancing by keeping 1.5 metres between people, avoid shaking hands, wear a face mask, and always keep COVID-19 safety guidelines top of mind.
