World Oceans Day is observed annually on June 8 and presents an invaluable opportunity to raise awareness about ocean conservation and inspire action to protect these crucial ecosystems.
Engaging children in activities that foster an understanding and appreciation of the oceans is an excellent way to instil a sense of responsibility towards our planet from an early age. Through hands-on projects, kids can learn about marine life and ecosystems, as well as the significance of preserving our oceans.
We’re excited to introduce a fun activity that includes vibrant sea creatures and the creation of a miniature ocean, designed to spark kids imaginations. Explore our step-by-step instructions for a fun and educational craft activity that parents, teachers, and caregivers can organise to celebrate World Oceans Day.
Things you’ll need:
- Coloured copy paper
- Pencil
- Ruler
- Marker
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Pencil colours, crayons, or watercolours
- Any round object (compass or plate)
1. Take a sheet of A3 blue-coloured copy paper and a round object, such as a compass or plate, to draw a circle with a minimum size of 30 x 30 cm.
2. Once the circle is drawn, carefully cut it out using scissors. Try to ensure the edges are smooth.
3. Next, choose two different coloured copy paper sheets and draw evenly spaced 2cm lines across the paper.
4. Carefully cut along the lines to create neat paper strips. You will use these strips to create a wave-like structure in your miniature ocean.
5. Take a blank white sheet and draw sea creatures and sea plants of your choice. Use a marker to define the outlines of the creatures.
6. To bring your underwater creatures to life, use brightly coloured pencils, crayons, or watercolours.
7. Prepare to assemble your ocean masterpiece. Start by arranging the paper strips on your circle cut-out. Make a series of wave-like curves with every strip and stick them in place with a glue stick.
8. Decorate your World Oceans Day miniature with your colourful sea creatures. Stick them carefully on top of the waves, arranging them in a visually appealing pattern.
